During a family trip to NYC while serving as college president, we were in a crowded subway car filled with diverse faces. The young man sitting beside me looked sad. I engaged him in conversation.

 

He told me about the break-up of his long-time, live-in girlfriend. I offered a few reassuring and comforting words.

Touched by this troubled stranger as we exited, I commented "That individual conversation was, in some ways, more gratifying than being CEO of a multi-million-dollar organization."

Helping others is heartfelt. This story speaks to the need for compassion, understanding and connection. The pandemic has created tremendous isolation and it is more important than ever to RECONNECT.
